AWS to use 100% renewable energy by 2025

December 26, 2021

Climate change is the one of the largest issues facing the world today. In order to potentially avoid the worst impacts of climate change, it is urgent that the use of fossil fuels is phased out in favor of clean renewable energy, like solar or wind. By electrifying everything, society could focus on improving the climate impacts of the power plants, ensuring electricity is coming from clean renewable sources.

In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge, which commits them, as well as more than 200 other companies, to using 100% renewable energy by 2040, 10 years earlier than the Paris Agreement.

However, in a recent AWS Re:Invent keynote with Peter DeSantis, Senior Vice President, AWS Utility Computing, Mr. DeSantis shares that AWS is on-track to use 100% renewable energy by 2025!

He also shared that in 2021 AWS has 12 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity - that is a lot!

By hosting your applications on AWS, you are also hosting your applications using renewable energy and not directly contributing to climate change through the use of non-renewable resources. That is something to feel good about!

You can find more details about renewable energy at AWS at their Sustainability in the Cloud website.

Happy Coding,
